Jeremy Schwartz recently spoke with Jawad Mian, editor of “ Stray Reflections,” and Richard Clarida, global strategic advisor to PIMCO and economics professor at Columbia, regarding their thoughts on policy action by the Federal Reserve (Fed), the Bank of Japan (BOJ) and the European Central Bank (ECB), as well as global implications for investing. Below I outline the key takeaways.
With the U.S. equity markets enjoying a tremendous positive run over the last six to seven years, with few drawdowns passing the 10% threshold, some investors are looking for alternative investment solutions designed to hedge market risk.
For a long time, many investors allocated their portfolios to traditional asset classes only—namely equity and fixed income, often investing on a long-only basis. Over the years, investment researchers hypothesized that diversifying by incorporating international equities, small caps or even emerging market debt could help increase returns and lower risks for the entire portfolio.
Last week, Professor Siegel and I chat with Marc Chandler, Head of Global Markets Strategy at Brown Brothers Harriman, about his views on divergent central bank policy actions, implications for the U.S. dollar, euro and yen, as well as his thoughts regarding emerging markets.
